The Perth Mint and Australia Post have joined to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first banknote of Australia with a unique and limited silver coin and stamp set that debuts just in time for the 2013 FIP World Stamp Expo.
This product not only includes a proof silver coin designed after Australia’s First Banknote, but also two commemorative stamps celebrating the note’s release in 1913. The set’s mintage is very attractive to collectors with only 3,000 made.
Rectangular-shaped like currency with measurements of 47.60 x 27.60 mm, the proof coin is struck in one ounce of .999 fine silver to a thickness of 4.00 mm. Its reverse design depicts the 1913 ten shilling banknote that was introduced to the public in May of that year as a result of the passage of the Notes Act in 1910. Inscriptions around the design include "Australia’s First Banknote", "100th Anniversary", "1 oz 999 silver" and the dates "1913-2013".
Shown on the obverse is the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II with surrounding inscriptions of "Queen Elizabeth II,", "Australia," "2013" and the denomination "1 Dollar." This is a legal tender coin of Australia.
An attractive display case holds the silver coin and stamp set. The proof coin is centered with the Australia Post stamps to the left and right. The two stamps have denominations of 60 cents and $2.60. The 60-cent stamp portrays the official note numbering ceremony in 1913. The $2.60 stamp depicts the Australian Coat of Arms as it appears on the first banknote.
