The United States Mint released its 2011-P Glacier National Park 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at 12:00 PM (noon) Eastern Time. The strike is the second one dated 2011 and the seventh collector issue in the America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins™ series.
The Mint listed the Glacier silver uncirculated coin for $229.95, a price matching the previous two issues still available — the 2010 Mount Hood silver coin for Oregon and the 2011 Gettysburg silver coin for Pennsylvania. Pricing was lowered from 279.95 in early October on these two coins when silver dropped some $10 an ounce, meaning large swings in precious metals can result in price adjustments.
Circulating Glacier America the Beautiful Quarters have been available since April 4, 2011, and the investment-grade Glacier National Park 5 Ounce Silver Bullion Coin started selling through the Mint’s network of Authorized Purchasers beginning on April 25. This new 5 ounce uncirculated coin, however, is a little different.
It still bears the same reverse design depicting a mountain goat clamoring over the rugged terrain of the park with Mount Reynolds off in the distance, and the inscriptions of GLACIER, MONTANA, 2011 and E PLURIBUS UNUM. It also has the same obverse or heads side featuring the familiar portrait of George Washington as the quarter an bullion coin. Additionally, the uncirculated coin matches the bullion version with its 3-inch diameter, 99.9% fine silver composition, and an incused edge of .999 FINE SILVER 5.0 OUNCE. The difference, then, is the uncirculated finish and the "P" mint mark located on the obverse. It signifies that that 2011-P Glacier 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin was produced in the United States Mint facility in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The bullion strikes have a bright finish and no mint mark, although they were also struck at the same Philadelphia Mint.
In the Mint’s release announcement, it stated the official maximum mintage for the uncirculated coin will be 35,000. That was the same level as the previous 2011 Gettysburg issue. Each of the five 2010-dated coins had limited mintages of 27,000.
The 2011-P Glacier 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin may be ordered at http://www.usmint.gov/ or via the toll-free phone number, 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468).
There will be a five coin order limit per household, which may change after one week of availability, according to the United States Mint. Later 2011 uncirculated coins celebrate Olympic National Park in Washington, Vicksburg National Military Park in Mississippi and Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Oklahoma. The release date for the Olympic coin is November 29, but the dates for the latter two issues have not yet been published.
