Another extra large, five ounce, investment-grade silver coin is now available. The United States Mint started offering the 2012 Acadia National Park 5 Ounce Silver Bullion Coin to its network of Authorized Purchasers.
Initial sales reveal 9,900 have been ordered according to data from the U.S. Mint released on Monday, July 30, 2012. That number is sharply higher than the coin’s predecessor, featuring Chaco Culture National Historical Park 5 Ounce Silver Bullion Coin, which had a total of 7,400 by Monday and started with sales of 3,200 back on June 25, 2012.
The new .999 pure silver, three inch diameter coin honors the national park in Maine and the prior one honors the historical park in New Mexico. Their reverse designs depict iconic scenes of each location.
The Acadia coin is the thirteenth in the America the Beautiful 5 Ounce Silver Bullion Coin series. Overall sales for those coins still sold by the U.S. Mint have been provided in the table below.

Bullion products are not sold directly to the public by the Mint but instead in bulk to Authorized Purchasers for a small premium above the current price of silver each product contains. Minimum orders for this series are 500 ounces or 100 coins. AP’s then resell the coins, and they become available in the secondary market.
Two more five ounce, 2012-dated silver bullion coins are due this year, but their launch dates have not been published. They will feature designs emblematic of Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park in Hawaii and Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska.
Corresponding numismatic versions are also produced by the U.S. Mint, but they are sold directly to the public. Bullion and collector grade issues have the same size, weight, composition, and designs, but there are a few main differences. Bullion coins do not have mint marks but collector issues show the "P" mint mark on the obverse. Collector strikes also go through a special treatment during production to achieve an uncirculated finish, and they are shipped in special presentation package that includes a Certificate of Authenticity from the Mint.
Sales of the Chaco Culture National Historical Park 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin began on July 9. The Acadia National Park 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin sales are scheduled to start on August 13 followed by the Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins on September 24.
