Like other coins in the Koala series, each of these is composed from 99.9% pure silver. Shown on the reverse is the image of a sleeping koala. Koalas are only found in the coastal regions of eastern and southern Australia. Their indigenous nature to the country makes them an ideal icon to be used on coins representing the nation.

Australian Koala Silver Coin Design and Specifications

The reverse design of the 2012 coin finds a sleeping koala clinging to the branch of a eucalyptus tree — an original work from Perth Mint artist Aleysha Howarth. This design is the official image chosen for all of the 2012-dated silver koala coins and appears on other strikes in the series, including the associated bullion coins.

Surrounding the image of the napping marsupial are the inscriptions of "AUSTRALIAN KOALA," "2012" and "1 KILO 999 SILVER." The reverse also includes the Perth Mint’s historic ‘P’ mintmark shown just above the back of the koala.

Each Koala 1 Kilo Silver Coin is struck as legal tender of Australia under the Australian Currency Act of 1965. The coin has been given a face value of $30 dollars is indicated on the obverse of the strike with the corresponding inscription of "30 DOLLARS." Other obverse inscriptions include "ELIZABETH II" and "AUSTRALIA." Also shown on the obverse is the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Perth houses each 1 kilo silver coin in a black presentation case that is accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity. The coin, case and certificate are placed inside an illustrated shipper for transport to the buyer.

About the Perth Mint

The Royal Mint of England originally opened the Perth Mint of Australia (http://www.perthmint.com.au/) in 1899 as a branch of the London facility. Its original purpose was to refine gold from nearby deposits in Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie and mint gold sovereigns from it.

It continued in operation as a branch of the Royal Mint until ownership was transferred to the State Government of Western Australia in 1970. Today, the Perth is the official issuer of the Australian Federal Government’s Gold and Silver Bullion Coin Program in addition to producing some of the world’s most unique collectible coins.
