Appearing from the Perth Mint of Australia is the 2012 Australian Outback Silver Coin Collection which features three coins with designs emblematic of the iconic creatures of the country.
Each coin is struck to specimen quality from 99.9% pure silver. The three pieces showcase color images of a kookaburra, a koala and a kangaroo. They are presented together in one display case.
The Perth Mint (www.perthmint.com.au) is no stranger to coinage depicting these three iconic creatures. It has been releasing kookaburra, koala and kangaroo coins for years. This collection, however, marks the first time that all three have been featured in 1/2 oz. of 99.9% pure silver and struck to specimen quality with color.
If the reverse designs of the coins appear familiar to collectors, they should. They are the same basic designs used by the Perth Mint for the original 2012 kookaburra, koala and kangaroo coins issued over the last several months.
Australian Outback Silver Coin Designs, Specifications and Order Details
Shown on the reverse of the kookaburra silver coin is the colored image of the bird resting on a eucalyptus tree with green gum leaves surrounding it. Reverse inscriptions on the strike include "AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA" and "2012 1/2 oz 999 SILVER."
The reverse of the koala silver coin shows an adult koala sleeping on a branch of a eucalyptus tree with its front paws dangling from the side of the branch. Inscriptions on this reverse include "AUSTRALIAN KOALA" and "2012 1/2 oz 999 SILVER."
Finally, the reverse of the kangaroo silver coin shows a kangaroo placed amidst a colored depiction of the Australian bush scene complete with a water tank and windmill. Reverse inscriptions include "AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO" and "2012 1/2 oz 999 SILVER."
Also appearing on the reverse of each coin is the Perth Mint’s historic ‘P’ mintmark. It may be found to the left of each design.
These three coins are each produced as legal tender of Australia under the Australian Currency Act of 1965. As such, the obverse of each contains the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Obverse inscriptions surrounding the portrait include "ELIZABETH II," "AUSTRALIA" and "50 CENTS." That 50 cents is indicative of their legal tender face value.
