A little more than one month following the release of the previous strike in the series, the fourth debut for this year’s five ounce investment-grade silver coins launched. Orders for the 2012 Hawaii Volcanoes National Park 5 Ounce Silver Bullion Coin are being accepted at the United States Mint from its network of Authorized Purchasers.
Because the coins are bullion products, they are only available to a select group of depositories and distributors making bulk orders with the U.S. Mint. Once the Hawaii Volcanoes coins travel distribution channels, however, the general public can buy them from various coin dealers and precious metals firms.
Strikes in the America the Beautiful 5 Ounce Silver Bullion Coin series first surged, dipped a bit, and again are becoming more popular. They can make desirable investment vehicles due to the five troy ounces of .999 fine silver, but also see interest for their reverse designs depicting national parks and sites across the United States and its territories.
The latest coin features Hawaii Volcanoes National Park located on the big island of Hawaii. As of September 10, initial sales hit 7,900. While that number may seem high for the first day, it lagged behind the starting number of coins sold for the prior issue that showcased Acadia National Park, with 9,900 on July 30.
Sales of the older 2011-2012 coins still available did not change on Monday. Currently, seven others are being offered. In a typical sales week, if the totals change, then the figures for at least two or three coins in the series will jump. Minimum orders, since they are sold in bulk, consist of 100 coins of one design.
Overall, the Hawaii Volcanoes coin makes the fourteenth installment in the America the Beautiful 5 Ounce Silver Bullion Coin series. The most recent sales figures for all of the coins sold by the U.S. Mint so far have been updated in the table below.

Next up in 2012 will be the Denali bullion coin with a reverse design emblematic of Denali National Park and Preserve located in Alaska. Only five new designs are scheduled for each year until every state, territory, and the District of Columbia is represented in the series. In all, 56 national parks or sites will be honored.
A corresponding collector version of the 2012 Hawaii Volcanoes National Park 5 Ounce Silver Bullion Coin will hit the market on September 24, 2012, per the United States Mint product schedule. The Mint sells this coin, in a numismatic uncirculated quality, directly to the public and with a higher premium. It bears a mint mark, "P," on the obverse but otherwise contains the same weight, size and designs. Since collectors are targeted, the coin ships in a presentation case with a Certificate of Authenticity from the Mint.
