Collectors looking to add one of the 2012 America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins™ to their collection will notice that there are only four options available from the United States Mint. Of the five 2012-dated strikes of the program, one achieved a sell-out status last month.

No longer available is the 2012-P Hawaii Volcanoes National Park 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin. The U.S. Mint stopped selling it in mid-January. Its final reported sales total is 14,863.

From that number, it can be inferred that 15,000 of the silver coins were produced. If that is true, it may also mean that other 2012-dated coins could be quickly approaching sell-outs.

When they debuted, the U.S. Mint indicated the maximum mintage of each release was 25,000. However, initial demand for collector silver coins often dictates ending, and lower final production totals. This was evidently the case for the Hawaii silver coin and may also be true for the Chaco Culture silver coin, the Acadia silver coin and the Denali silver coin as each of their current sales remain below the 15,000 mark.

The chart below shows the most recent sales stats for these silver coins.

America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin Latest Sales
2012-P El Yunque National Forest Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins 16,122
2012-P Chaco Culture National Historical Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins 13,678
2012-P Acadia National Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins 14,450
2012-P Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins 14,863
2012-P Denali National Park and Preserve Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins 13,168

According to the chart, Acadia silver coins are easily within striking distance of the 15,000 level. Trailing Acadia sales, but not by much, are Chaco Culture silver coins.

An outlier, the El Yunque National Forest silver coin has attained sales above 16,000. That may be attributed to the fact that it was the first of the 2012-dated America the Beautiful Five Ounce Coins issued and demand levels were judged differently earlier into the year.

Changes to Upcoming 2013 ATB 5 Ounce Silver Coins

If any more of the 2012-dated five ounce silver coins sell out, it may be a while before collectors have new options to replace them. The Mint’s product schedule was recently updated to show release dates for the five 2013-dated coins as "to be determined." When the product schedule was initially unveiled late last year, some of the projected dates had been tentatively scheduled with the remaining strikes showing at least the month of their expected appearance.

First on the list was the 2013-P White Mountain National Forest silver coin that was scheduled for release on February 12. It was to be followed in April by the Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial silver coin; in June by the Great Basin National Park silver coin; in September by the Ft. McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine silver coin; and finally, in November by the Mount Rushmore National Memorial silver coin.

The Mint’s explanation for the delay is to allow time to decide mintage levels for the silver coins.
