Sales ended Wednesday for the 2012 Silver Proof Set after a surprise sell out closed buying almost seven months to the day since its release and at the lowest sales level since the annual set of 90% silver coins first appeared in 1992.
Last year’s set in contrast was available for nearly two years before sales shut down this past Monday at 12:00 noon ET, and the U.S. Mint forewarned its end several weeks ago.
Introduced on June 4, 2012 and sold out at the same $67.95 price, the seven silver coins in the proof set include the Kennedy half-dollar, the five 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters and the Roosevelt dime. Together, these silver coins weigh 1.34 troy ounces and have a silver melt value of $40.07 based on the current silver spot price of $29.94 an ounce. Also within the proof set are seven non silver coins to include the four 2012 Presidential dollars, the 2012 Native American dollar, the Jefferson nickel and the Lincoln cent. All the coins come from the San Francisco Mint and have the ‘S’ mint mark.
U.S. Mint sales stats as of December 31, 2013 show collectors have purchased a total of 393,757 sets. In comparison, sales of the 2011 Silver Proof Set are at 573,973. Sets sold as recently as 2008 attained sales of over 774,000.
Other United States Mint collector products contain the same silver coins presented in the 2012 Silver Proof Set. The five silver quarters are within the 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set and in the 2012 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set. This latter set also includes the 90% silver half-dollar, the 90% silver dime and a one-ounce, 99.9% fine proof American Silver Eagle.
Other 2012-dated annual sets that have sold include the clad 2012 Proof Set and the clad 2012 Presidential $1 Coin Proof Set.
The U.S. Mint has not scheduled an exact date for the upcoming 2013-dated Silver Proof Set. The planned month of release is May.
