2012 Star-Spangled Banner Silver Dollars

The newest items to burst on the United States Mint’s sales list were the 2012 Star-Spangled Banner Silver Dollars, $5 gold coins and the companion two-coin proof set.

Collectors quickly began buying them as soon as they launched last Monday, March 5. Three of the five available offerings contained silver, while the other two were composed of gold. In total, 69,406 of the orders included Star-Spangled Banner Silver Dollars. Gleaming more than the rest were the individual proofs at 44,479, followed by the individual uncirculated dollars with 18,763. The two-coin proof set accounted for sales of 6,164.

The new commemorative coins easily out shined their gold counterparts, and undoubtedly it was in large part due to the price difference. 3,103 of the proof Star-Spangled Banner $5 gold coins and 2,355 of the uncirculated $5 gold options were purchased. Prices ranged from $44.95 to $49.95 for the silver dollars while the gold items ranged between $495.00 and $505.00. The two-coin proof set, having one gold coin and one silver dollar, topped them all at $555.00.

As for the year’s first commemorative coins, demand for Infantry Soldier Silver Dollars eased just a bit in the latest report. Still, sales remained extremely robust considering their February 16 launch date. Combined sales totaled 33,148 versus the previous 36,685. Proof Infantry dollars added 18,303 against 19,338 previously, and the uncirculated climbed 7,187 compared to 7,991. The popular Defenders of Freedom Set grew by 7,658 after gaining 9,356 in the prior round. It should be noted only 9,580 of the Defenders set remain for sale out of the 50,000 produced.

The five ounce America the Beautiful Silver Uncirculated Coins sprung back to life in this report after their sales resumed last Tuesday following a near two-week suspension. Together, collectors grabbed 1,919 of them, which made up for the negative adjustment of 50 in the previous week. The Chickasaw coin led the group with 728.
