2012-W Proof Silver Eagle Coins Top 500K After Sales Resume

Silver Eagle coins dominated collector and investors’ minds, according to the latest U.S. Mint sales data. Behind Eagles were newly released 2012 Acadia National Park 5 Ounce Silver Bullion Coins that seemed to fly off Mint shelves compared to the prior release in the series.
Bullion Silver Eagle coins confirmed their most popular status after 810,000 were scooped up by U.S. Mint Authorized Purchasers (AP’s) in the final days of July. Bogged down by a couple of slow earlier weeks, July sales came to 2,278,000 and placed fourth best in the year.
Next were the 2012-W Proof Silver Eagle coins. Between Wednesday, July 25, when the U.S. Mint resumed their sales after a suspension for re-pricing, and Monday, July 30, collectors rushed to buy 34,061 of the individually packaged strikes. The only time this year collectors bought more was when the Eagles launched in April. Proof and bullion versions have several differences, including the proof’s mirror-like background surface, its "W" mint mark, and the Certificate of Authenticity with the special presentation case.
The third best seller for the week was another investment grade issue. When the bullion Acadia silver coin launched, U.S. Mint AP’s snatched up 9,900. The number of orders easily beat the initial orders of the Chaco Culture silver bullion coin in June. When they launched, AP’s only picked up 3,200.
The new release also spurred renewed interest in the older coins in the America the Beautiful 5 Ounce Silver Bullion Coin series, as evidenced by their surging totals. The El Yunque coin tally jumped by 1,600 and the Chaco Culture figure grew by 1,500.
