2013 Australian Kangaroo High Relief Silver Coin Released
July 4, 2014 by Darrin Lee Unser · Leave a Comment
Continuing an annual series dating back to 2010, the Perth Mint of Australia has released the 2014 Australian Kangaroo 1 oz Silver Proof High Relief Coin.
Shown on the reverse of the coin is a high relief design of a single kangaroo set in a traditional rural scene. The issue limit of this release is set at a maximum of 19,000.
While kangaroo high relief silver coins debuted in 2010, the Perth Mint has been striking coins with an image of the marsupial for many more years. In fact, the related Australian Nugget bullion series started featuring the likenesses of kangaroos in 1990. That series continues to be one of the most popular bullion programs in the world.
Kangaroos are endemic to Australia and generally feature large, powerful hind legs and a muscular tail — both features which aid in their ability to leap impressive distances. Female kangaroos also have a pouch where they carry their young (called joeys).
Kangaroo Silver Proof High Relief Coin Designs and Specifications
A single adult kangaroo is depicted in high relief on the reverse of the proof silver coin as designed by Perth Mint artist Tom Vaughan. The traditional rural scene includes features such as a fence and rolling hills. Inscribed on the reverse are AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO and 2014 1 oz 999 SILVER. The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark appears to the left of the marsupial.
Each silver coin is struck as legal tender of Australia under the Australian Currency Act of 1965, featuring an obverse of Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Queen ELIZABETH II. Surrounding the portrait are inscriptions of 1 DOLLAR, ELIZABETH II and AUSTRALIA.
