2013 Australian Koala 5 Ounce High Relief Silver Coins

The Perth Mint of Australia expands its intensely popular koala silver coin series with a new high relief size. Available now are proof 2013 Australian Koala 5 Ounce High Relief Silver Coins.

These proof coins are each struck from five ounces of 99.9% pure silver and feature high relief obverse and reverse designs. The mintage for this latest collectible is only 5,000.

While it marks the first high relief coin in this size, the Australian Koala series of silver coins date back to when they first appeared in bullion form in 2007. Collector grade coins soon followed with a five ounce proof making its debut in 2011. In 2012, the Perth Mint released the first high relief Australian koala strike in a one-ounce size.

Designs and Specifications for Koala High Relief Silver Coins

Each 2013 Australian Koala High Relief Silver Coin is in five ounces of .999 fine silver and features a diameter of 50.60 mm. The massive amount of silver in such a relatively small diameter provides for greater detail in the high reliefs of the obverse and reverse designs. The thickness of this release is 12.50 mm. Each has a minimum gross weight of 155.673 grams.

Shown on the reverse is the image of an adult koala resting in the fork of a eucalyptus tree. The design is the work of Perth Mint artist Tom Vaughan and made its debut on the 2013 Australian Koala Silver Bullion Coins. Inscribed above the marsupial is "AUSTRALIAN KOALA" with "2013 5 OZ 999 SILVER" appearing below. Off to the right, the Perth Mint’s historic ‘P’ mintmark is found.

The obverse of the coin has the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Obverse inscriptions include "ELIZABETH II," "AUSTRALIA" and the legal tender face value of "8 DOLLARS."

Each of these silver coins is legal tender of Australia under the Australian Currency Act of 1965.

The Perth Mint displays each in a black presentation case which ships inside an illustrated shipper. A numbered certificate of authenticity is also included.
