2013 Australian Opal Kangaroo Silver Coin Third in Series

Available now from the Perth Mint of Australia is the proof 2013 Australian Opal Kangaroo Silver Coin.

This release marks the third issue in the Mint’s Australian Opal series. Like its predecessors, the Australian Opal Kangaroo Silver Coin is struck from one ounce of 99.9% pure silver and features an inner panel of authentic Australian opal.

Previous releases under the Australian Opal series include:

• 2012 Australian Opal Koala Silver Coin – released in February of 2012
• 2012 Australian Opal Wombat Silver Coin – released in August of 2012

These previous two silver coins sold out. And like them, the maximum mintage of this newest coin is 8,000.

Proof Silver Coin Designs and Specifications

Perhaps Australia’s most iconic creature, the kangaroo is featured on the reverse of these silver coins. The scene was designed by Perth Mint artist Aleysha Howarth. The image of the marsupial is found detailed in the inner panel of pure Australian opal. Surrounding the opal is an outer panel depicting Sturts Desert Pea leaves and blossoms along with a first crescent moon and the Southern Cross star group visible only in the Southern hemisphere.

Reverse inscriptions include "KANGAROO" and "2013 1 OZ 999 SILVER." Off to the left, the Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark is shown.

The obverse of the proof silver coin contain’s the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The portrait is surrounded by the inscriptions of "ELIZABETH II," "AUSTRALIA" and "1 DOLLAR." That "1 DOLLAR" inscription is indicative of the coin’s legal tender face value.

Specifications of the release include a gross weight of 31.135 grams, a diameter o 36.60 mm and a thickness of 4.5 mm.

These silver coins comes with a unique Perth Mint display case that includes a light that turns on when the case is opened, representing the moon shining down on the kangaroo of the coin below. An illustrated shipper is also included along with a numbered certificate of authenticity.
