2013 Australian Opal Pygmy Possum Silver Coin Fourth in Series

The Perth Mint of Australia unveils another coin in an extremely unique series with the recent release of the 2013 Australian Opal Pygmy Possum Silver Coin.

This proof quality coin is composed of one ounce of 99.9% pure silver with an inner panel of authentic Australian opal. That panel on the reverse side of the coin contains the design showcasing an image of the pygmy possum.

It is offered as the fourth in the Australian Opal series. Previous releases of the program include:

• 2012 Australian Opal Koala Silver Coin – released in February of 2012
• 2012 Australian Opal Wombat Silver Coin – released in August of 2012
• 2013 Australian Opal Kangaroo Silver Coin – released in March of 2013

This series has proven desirable to many collectors with all three previous issues achieving sell-outs. Like the predecessors, the Pygmy Possum Silver Coin has a maximum mintage of just 8,000.

Proof Silver Coin Designs and Specifications

Designed by Perth Mint artist Aleysha Howarth, the reverse design offers a depiction of a pygmy possum on a banksia branch. This image is detailed on the panel of pure Australian opal. Surrounding the panel, banksia leaves and blossoms are shown along with a first quarter moon and a representation of the Southern Cross star group.

Reverse inscriptions include "PYGMY POSSUM" and "2013 1 OZ 999 SILVER." Also on the reverse is the Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mint mark.

Struck as legal tender of Australia, the obverse includes a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley. Inscriptions surrounding the effigy read "ELIZABETH II," "AUSTRALIA" and the face value of "1 DOLLAR."

Each coin is struck from one ounce of .999 fine silver with a diameter of 36.60 mm, a thickness of 4.5 mm, and a gross weight of 31.135 grams.

The Perth Mint presents the coins in a unique display case that has a light shining down to capture the opal imagery. A numbered certificate of authenticity indicating the 8,000 maximum mintage is also found with the coin’s illustrated shipper.
