2013 Splendid Fairy-Wren Silver Coin Ends Birds of Australia Series

Closing out its Birds of Australia Series, the Perth Mint has released the 2013 Splendid Fairy-Wren Silver Proof Coin featuring a colorful image of the bird on its reverse.
Each Splendid Fairy-Wren coin is struck from one-half ounce of 99.9% pure silver. A limited mintage is in place on the release with 10,000 available worldwide.
This coin is offered as the fifth and last issue of the Perth Mint’s Birds of Australia Program. This series debuted in September of 2012 and has included the following silver coins:
- Red-Tailed Black-Cockatoo Silver Coin – released September 2012
- Budgerigar Silver Coin – released November 2012
- Regent Bowerbird Silver Coin – released February 2013
- Rainbow Lorikeet Silver Coin – released May 2013
All coins of the series feature colored images of the showcased bird on their reverse sides.
The Splendid Fairy-Wren bird is native to Australia. It is also known as the Splendid Wren or Blue Wren. Mating males feature plumage notable for their predominantly bright blue and black. The males also commonly pluck flower petals for display to the females.
Splendid Fairy-Wren Silver Coin Designs and Specifications
On the reverse of the coin is a colorful mating male wren with another wren off in the distance. This reverse design is the work of Perth Mint artist Natasha Muhl. Inscriptions around the scene read "SPLENDID FIARY-WREN." Also present is the Perth Mint’s mint mark of ‘P’.
Each silver coin is struck as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act of 1965. The face value of 50 cents is indicated on the obverse along with the inscriptions of "2013," "1/2 OZ 999 SILVER," "AUSTRALIA" and "ELIZABETH II." These inscriptions surround the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
Specifications of the release include a composition of 0.5 ounces of 99.9% pure silver struck to proof quality. Each coin has a maximum diameter of 36.60 mm, a maximum thickness of 2.30 mm and a minimum gross weight of 15.591 grams.
These silver coins are housed in a black Perth Mint display case. A numbered certificate is also included. The case and certificate are placed within an illustrated shipper depicting a Splendid Fairy-Wren.
Coins in the Birds of Australia Series have a price of AUS $54.55, or US $49.94. Pricing is subject to change based on market conditions.
