A new series of unique silver coins featuring hologram elements makes its debut from the Royal Canadian Mint with the release of the 2013 Twelve-Spotted Skimmer 1/2 oz Silver Coin.
Offered on the reverse of the proof quality coin is a colored depiction of a Twelve-Spotted Skimmer dragonfly, commonly found near the waterways of southern Canada from British Columbia to Nova Scotia. Adding an enhanced level of detail is the hologram technology to represent the water.
This coin marks the first issue in the new Dragonflies series featuring painted Canadian dragonfly species set against hologram images of their natural habitat.
The Twelve-Spotted Skimmer can be identified by its spotted gossamer wings and powder-blue body. Adults grow as large as 5-6 cm long. Their active season typically ranges from early summer to late August.
Twelve-Spotted Skimmer Silver Coin Designs and Specifications
Depicted on the reverse of the 2013 Twelve-Spotted Skimmer Silver Coin is an image of the dragonfly shown in its true-life colors. The Skimmer is amidst its natural surroundings of flora common to the regions of southern Canada. Reverse inscriptions include CANADA, 2013, and the legal tender face value of 10 DOLLARS. Botanical artist Celia Godkin created the design.
Shown on the obverse is the Susanna Blunt effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Obverse inscriptions include ELIZABETH II and D G REGINA.
Specifications of the release indicate a composition of 1/2 ounce of 99.99% pure silver. This gives the silver coin a total weight of 15.87 grams. Its diameter is 34 mm and it has a serrated edge. Maximum mintage of the coin is 10,000.
Orders for the Twelve-Spotted Skimmer Silver Coin are accepted via the Royal Canadian Mint’s website (mint.ca), or by calling 1-800-267-1871 (Canada) or 1-800-268-6468 (US).
I would really like to buy this coin – but the mint doesn’t have it – they are awaiting stock, yet you can’t order ahead? I find this happening over and over again and I land up paying high prices elsewhere to get the coins I want. It is very frustrating when the mint says 80% sold out, awaiting stock and you still can’t get your coin. Yet you see the coin before it’s even available for sale on Ebay as “pre-order” for much more than the mint. I check daily The mints page. Ex. the dinosaur glow in the dark coin – the first day I went to order it – gone!!! ugh, ugh, ugh. Thanks for listening.
