2013 Winter Silver Square Coin Third in Australian Seasons Series

Available now from the Perth Mint of Australia is the 2013 Winter Silver Proof Square Coin. This strike marks the third of four silver coins issued in the Perth Mint’s Australian Seasons series.

Found on the reverse of the silver coin is a design emblematic of the Australian season of winter. Each coin is struck from one ounce of .999 fine silver to a unique square shape.

Winter is a time of renewal in Australia. The season, occurring in June, July and August, is marked with rainfall and cooler temperatures. Those temperature changes are more moderate in the tropical regions and along the coasts with the inland areas subject to greater variations.

The Australian Season series will include a total of four coins:

• 2013 Summer Silver Proof Square Coin – released November 2012
• 2013 Autumn Silver Proof Square Coin – released February 2013
• 2013 Winter Silver Proof Square Coin
• 2013 Spring Silver Proof Square Coin – expected later in 2013

2013 Winter Silver Square Coin Designs and Specifications

A colored design emblematic of the season of winter is found on the reverse of the silver coin. The design, by Perth Mint artist Ing Ing Jong, shows an Australian Green Tree Frog on a branch. Behind the frog, a winter night sky and rain can be seen. Reverse inscriptions include WINTER and 1 OZ 999 SILVER. Also found on the reverse is the Perth Mint’s historic ‘P’ mint mark.

The obverse contains Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her portrait is surrounded by the inscriptions of ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, 2013 and the face value of 1 DOLLAR.

These silver coins are each struck as legal tender of Australia under the Australian Currency Act of 1965.

Maximum mintage for the coin is limited to 5,000. This is the same mintage used for previous coins of the series.

Each features dimensions of 33.20 mm by 33.20 mm, a thickness of 4.00 mm and a gross weight of 31.135 grams.

The silver coin is presented in a Perth Mint display case along with an illustrated shipper and a numbered certificate of authenticity. Current pricing of the Winter Silver Square Coin is listed as AUS $90.00, but is subject to change.
