2014 Asian Elephant Silver Coin Second in Mother’s Love Series

Available now as the second issue in the Perth Mint of Australia’s Mother’s Love series is the 2014 Asian Elephant 1/2 oz Silver Proof Coin.

This silver coin features a colored reverse depicting a mother Asian elephant and her calf. Mintage of the individual coin is limited to 4,500 with another 1,500 reserved for other products. Each is currently selling for AUS $57.73, or US $53.40.

The Mother’s Love series debuted earlier this year and will include a total of five silver coins with each showcasing the special bond between a mother and her offspring. Coins of the program include:

• Lioness (released in February)
• Asian Elephant
• Giraffe
• Bear
• Orangutan

The remaining three silver coins will be issued in intervals throughout 2014.

"The mother dedicates all of her time and love to her calf, and will only give birth again after her first born has been weaned," describes the Perth Mint. "Highly protective, and ever conscious of her baby’s wellbeing, an Asian elephant mother will charge fiercely at any threat to her young calf."

Designs and Specifications of 2014 Asian Elephant 1/2 Oz Silver Coins

Asian elephant calves and their mothers have a special bond which is depicted on the reverse of the new half-ounce silver proof coin. The colored design shows a mother and calf with locking trunks. Jungle palms surround the pair. Inscriptions on the reverse include ‘ASIAN ELEPHANT’ and the Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.

Shown on the obverse is a right-facing portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The obverse also includes the inscriptions of ‘QUEEN ELIZABETH II,’ ‘2014,’ ‘TUVALU,’ ’50 CENTS’ and ‘1/2 oz 999 SILVER.’

As indicated by those inscriptions, these coins are issued as legal tender of the island nation of Tuvalu. The face value is 50 cents.
