Making a debut from the Perth Mint of Australia is the 2014 Australian Koala 1 Kilo Silver Proof Coin. Each is struck from one kilo of 99.9% pure silver to proof quality.
Mintage of the silver coin is limited to only 500. They are now available worldwide for AUS $1,590.90.
This series of kilo silver coins first debuted with the 2012 issue and then followed a year later with the 2013 release. However, smaller koala silver coins date back even further to 2007.
The program has proved popular with collectors not only because of the precious metal content, but also because of the annually changing reverse imagery.
Designs and Specifications of Koala 1 Kilo Silver Coins
The reverse of the 2014 Australian Koala 1 Kilo Silver Proof Coin features the likeness of a single koala. The image is a close-up view of the marsupial with a spray of eucalyptus leaves as designed by Perth Mint artist Michael Guilfoyle.
Inscriptions shown on the reverse include ‘AUSTRALIAN KOALA’ and ‘2014 1 KILO 999 SILVER.’ Additional reverse inscriptions include the Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark and the artist’s initials of ‘MG.’
These silver coins are struck as legal tender of Australia under the Australian Currency Act of 1965. Accordingly, an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II graces the obverse.
The portrait, by Ian Rank-Broadley, is surrounded by several inscriptions. These include ‘ELIZABETH II,’ ‘AUSTRALIA’ and ’30 DOLLARS.’ The artist’s initials of ‘IRB’ are also shown.
Specifications of the coin include a silver content of 32.151 troy ounces, a weight of 1001.002 grams, a diameter of 100.60 mm and a thickness of 14.60 mm.
Each silver coin ships in a classic Perth Mint display case along with an illustrated shipper and a numbered certificate of authenticity.
