2014 Australian Koala 5 Oz High Relief Silver Coins Sell Out
June 4, 2014 by Darrin Lee Unser · 3 Comments
Continuing a series of high relief five ounce silver coins that debuted last year, the Perth Mint of Australia released 2014 Australian Koala 5 Ounce High Relief Silver Coins on Monday, June 2. The Perth Mint’s inventory of them has already sold out.
Each is composed of five ounces of 99.9% pure silver and features a high relief reverse design of a koala. Maximum mintage for the coin is 5,000 — the same mintage seen for last year’s issue which also sold out.
"The koala is a well-known marsupial of Australia," describes the Perth Mint in a release. "Being nocturnal, this unique animal takes refuge from the harsh southern sun and is able to graze on gum leaves by living in eucalyptus forests."
This series of large high relief coins first appeared from the Perth Mint in 2013 with a koala issue. It was followed later in the year with five ounce silver kangaroo and kookaburra coins.
Designs and Specifications for Koala High Relief Silver Coins
A single koala is shown on the concave high relief reverse along with a spray of gum leaves. This is the same design as featured on other 2014 koala coins such as the associated bullion releases as well as numismatic varieties like the one ounce gilded koala.
Inscribed around the image are AUSTRALIAN KOALA and 2014 5 oz 999 SILVER. The image by Perth Mint artist Michael Guilfoyle also includes his initials along with the Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
Also in high relief, the obverse of the silver coin offers the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her likeness is surrounded by the inscriptions of ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA and the legal tender face value of 8 DOLLARS.

No, it hasn’t. I just checked.
Indeed! Interesting. They are back at least for now. The Mint had them listed as “sold out” this afternoon.
must be on the verge then. Discovered a few more. Some Perth mint employeee had put his lunchbox down on a small pile perhaps.
