Two Royal Canadian Mint coins showcase colored reverse designs of one of Canada’s most distinct birds, the northern pintail. Newly released are the 2014 $10 Pintail Duck 1/2 oz Fine Silver Coin and the 2014 25c Pintail Duck Colored Coin.
As seen in the images above, each presents a unique colored reverse depicting a pair of pintails in their natural habitat.
Both coins are offered in limited mintages and are sure to delight birders and collectors alike.
"The northern pintail is so named for its pin-like tail feathers. These long, skinny plumes accentuate the pintail’s slender build," offers the Royal Canadian Mint on its website. "It’s an elegant duck, with males typically sporting a chocolate-brown head, a blue-grey bill and a white neck with combinations of black, grey and white along the back, and a blackish-green patch called the ‘speculum’ shimmering from grey wings."
The female of the species is found in bronze and brown hues. This understated appearance helps to protect its nest and young.
