2014 Giraffe Silver Coin Third in Mother’s Love Series

The third release in the Perth Mint of Australia’s Mother’s Love series appears with the 2014 Giraffe 1/2 oz Silver Proof Coin.

Shown on the reverse of the 99.9% pure silver coin is a design depicting the bond between a mother giraffe and her calf. Mintage of the individual release is limited to 4,500 with an additional 1,500 reserved for other products.

"The extraordinary bond that a mother giraffe shares with her calf is unique among adult giraffes," describes the Perth Mint in a release for the silver coin. "If a calf is at risk of danger, its mother will stand over her offspring without hesitation and kick any animal that gets too close."

The Giraffe silver coin is the third of five releases in the Perth Mint’s Mother’s Love series. The completed program will include coins depicting:

• Lioness (released in February)
• Asian Elephant (released in April)
• Giraffe (this issue)
• Bear
• Orangutan

Designs and Specifications

Created by Ing Ing Jong, the reverse of the 2014 Giraffe 1/2 Oz Silver Coin offers a color design of a mother giraffe nuzzling her calf. Behind the pair is a depiction of the African Savannah. Inscribed below the scene is GIRAFFE. The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark appears at right with the designer’s initials, IJ, to the left.

These silver coins are struck as legal tender of the nation of Tuvalu. Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II graces the obverse. Obverse inscriptions include QUEEN ELIZABETH II, 2014, TUVALU, 50 CENTS and 1/2 oz 999 SILVER.
