Offered at a very limited mintage, the 2014 Proof Maple Leaves 5 oz. Silver Coin is now available from the Royal Canadian Mint.
The Royal Canadian Mint notes that this issue has the highest relief achieved on one of its 5 oz. silver coins. Its enhanced detail has added appeal by its low 2,500 mintage.
"Your coin’s design features the exceptional sculptural qualities of high relief, an age-old technique normally reserved for large medals and medallions," describes the Royal Canadian Mint’s website. "The maple leaves on this coin literally rise from the coin’s surface like sculptures."
To achieve the high relief, the silver coin was struck multiple times using enhanced tooling developed specifically for the task.
Maple leaves are a common theme found on Canadian coins, including the extremely popular Maple Leaf Silver Bullion Coins. The design included on this strike, however, has never before been released on a coin from the Royal Canadian Mint.
Designs and Specifications of Maple Leaves 5 oz Silver Coins
Canadian artist Luc Normandin designed the high relief image found on reverses of these silver coins. It is meant to represent three maple leaves gently drifting on an autumn breeze.
Normandin’s initials of ‘LM’ appear to the left of the design. Additional reverse inscriptions include "2014," "CANADA" and the legal tender face value of "50 DOLLARS."
Obverses have Susanna Blunt’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. "ELIZABETH II" and "D G REGINA" surround the portrait.
Each proof coin is struck from five ounce of 99.99% pure silver. The silver coins feature a weight of 157.6 grams, a diameter of 65.25 mm, and a serrated edge.
