Shown on the coin’s reverse is a design emblematic of Shenandoah National Park of Virginia. These five ounce silver coins for collectors launch at Noon (Eastern) on the 15th and have a maximum mintage of 30,000.

Shenandoah Five Ounce Silver Coins are the second 2014-dated release of the U.S. Mint’s America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin™ Program. Like other program issues, each is composed of five ounces of .999 fine silver and features a diameter of three inches.

Pricing and Subscription Discount

When issued, the coins may be ordered directly from the U.S. Mint for $154.95. This pricing is identical to the past four program releases but marks a significant decrease from coins issued previous to that point.

Decreased pricing is a direct result of lower market conditions for silver. In contrast, the 2010-dated program issues originally sold for $279.95.

Those looking for an even better deal may want to consider the U.S. Mint’s Subscription Program. Under the program, a 10% discount is given this year, bringing prices of the silver coins down to $139.45. Enrollees are shipped future program issues automatically.

Shenandoah National Park Silver Coin Design

A design mindful of Shenandoah National Park is featured on the reverse of each coin. This is the same basic design as first appeared on Shenandoah National Park Quarters which debuted on March 31, 2014 as part of the U.S. Mint’s America the Beautiful Quarters® Program.

The reverse depicts a day hiker taking in the view from Little Stony Man summit. It was designed and executed by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill and includes the inscriptions of SHENANDOAH, VIRGINIA, 2014, and E PLURIBUS UNUM.

All America the Beautiful related coinage bear the same basic obverse portrait of George Washington. The image of the first President of the United States was originally created by John Flanagan and first appeared on the 1932 circulating quarter-dollar. Inscriptions surrounding the effigy include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and QUARTER DOLLAR.

In addition, a ‘P’ mintmark is shown on the obverse of each coin. This indicates the coin was produced at the U.S. Mint’s facility in Philadelphia. Related America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins™ are also struck in Philadelphia but have no mintmark.

An edge inscription on each coin indicates its weight and fineness with .999 FINE SILVER 5.0 OUNCE.

Shenandoah National Park Coin Specifications and Mintages

Each Shenandoah National Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin is composed of 5.000 troy ounces of 99.9% pure silver, like all other program issues. That makes their melt values equal to five times the current price of silver. These coins feature a diameter of 3.0 inches and a thickness of 0.165 inch.

As mentioned, the maximum mintage has been established at 30,000. This represents an increase of 5,000 from the previous program issue which was the Great Smoky Mountains Silver Coin that debuted in April.

Ordering

When released, the 2014-P Shenandoah National Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin may be ordered directly from the United States Mint. Orders are accepted on the Mint’s website, right here, or by phone at 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468). No household or ordering limits are in place.

Each coin is encapsulated and presented inside a protective outer box. A United States Mint Certificate of Authenticity is also included.

Bullion Version

The United States Mint also produces similar America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins, as indicated earlier. These silver coins are nearly identical to the America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins, but lack a mintmark and have a brilliant finish instead of matte finish. (Read about how five ounce silver coins are made.)

In addition, the bullion coins are produced for investors and sold for a small premium above their melt value through the Mint’s network of authorized purchasers.

The Shenandoah National Park Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coin, released on May 5, opened with sales of 14,800 and ended its first week with sales of 15,200. On Tuesday, May 13, they moved up another 2,000 to 17,200.
