One of the most popular annual strikes issued by the United States Mint is now available with the release of the 2014-W Proof American Eagle Silver Coin.
The one-ounce proof Silver Eagle went on sale at Noon (Eastern Time) today, January 23, for a price of $52.95.
This release continues the annual series which dates back to 1986. In that year, the US Mint debuted the proof silver coins along with companion bullion American Eagle silver coins. Both proved to be favored by collectors and investors.
The two related coins are each struck from one ounce of .999 fine silver. Both also contain the same basic imagery with Adolph A. Weinman’s "Walking Liberty" design gracing the obverse and John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle with shield on the reverse.
However, the bullion series is intended for investors whereas this proof version is struck for numismatic purposes and feature a collector-grade finish:
"The American Eagle Silver Proof Coins are struck using .999 fine silver blanks that are specially treated and cleaned to ensure high-quality strikes," indicates the United States Mint in a press release about the release. "The coin bears the "W" mint mark, indicating its production at the United States Mint at West Point. Each coin is encapsulated in plastic, mounted in a satin-lined presentation case, and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity."
Proof American Eagle Silver Coins have appeared annually since the inaugural release of 1986 with the exception of 2009. That year saw its cancellation as unprecedented demand for the bullion version led the US Mint to divert all available blank planchets towards bullion production. Bullion demand has remained at record levels, however, the US Mint has been able to increase production and blank availability.
Hundreds of thousands of the new proof Silver Eagles will be sold within weeks. The US Mint indicates no household order limits are in place with customer demand determining the number of silver coins minted. Before selling out on Nov. 12, 2013, last year’s coin saw individual sales of 868,494. It is also in the 2013 US Mint Congratulations Set and the 2014 US Mint Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set, both still available and with respective US Mint sales of 15,739 and 34,447.
