2014 Silver Coins Celebrate Canada’s First Royal Visit

This month the Royal Canadian Mint introduced gold and silver coins in remembrance of the 75th anniversary the first Royal visit to Canada. The event commenced on May 17, 1939 when Britain’s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth began a historic 29-day visit across the country.

Three coins celebrate the first Royal visit, a $20 silver coin with a unique antique finish, a $25 ultra-high relief silver coin with a proof finish and a $200 ultra-high relief gold coin with a proof finish.

Both ultra-high relief coins share the same reverse design, a double effigy of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.

Appearing on the reverse of the $20 silver coin with the antique finish is an image of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth on the waving platform of the train which took them on a 14,000 kilometers rail journey from coast to coast and back again. The royal train was unique for its time, offering the best in carriages, and was specially fitted to include two convertible McLaughlin-Buicks for excursions into towns and cities along the way.

Coins are of the purist composition with the $200 gold coin in 99.999% fine gold and the each of the silver coins struck from 99.99% pure silver. Here are additional coin specifications, to include limited mintages:

Selling quickest is the $20 silver coin with the antique finish. The Royal Canadian Mint notes that 75% of the allotted 5,000 have sold.
