2014 Silver Proof Set Sales Retreat

Quite a change-up occurred in the latest weekly United States Mint sales stats among the typical top three selling silver products: the Silver Proof Set, the Proof Silver Eagle, and the Uncirculated Silver Eagle.

First, demand dropped in half for 2014-W Proof Silver Eagles compared to sales from the previous week, and it more than doubled for the 2014-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle. For the proofs, buyers scooped up 5,266 for a new total of 586,587 after taking 10,432 in the prior round. That allowed room for the Uncirculated Silver Eagles to move into first place with a gain of 6,763. Previously, they only climbed by 1,596. The latest advance puts the total for the uncirculated silver coins at 160,179.

Then, like an unexpected plot twist in the middle of a good book, demand for the 2014 Silver Proof Set fell so much that returns and canceled orders outnumbered new purchases. The Silver Proof Sets fell by 378 from 254,868 to 254,490. The fall may be attributed to an internal audit, which happens periodically. Sales are likely to bounce back soon.
