February 25, 2014 by Silver Coins Today Staff · Leave a Comment
The five ounces of 99.9% pure silver in a new 2014 Proof Year of the Horse Silver Coin from the Perth Mint of Australia makes it one of the bigger releases in the product line.
This silver coin is offered as a part of the Perth’s popular Lunar Series II program which has seen numismatic Year of the Horse Coins in gold, gilded, rectangle and other silver sizes.
The Year of the Horse is a reference to the fact that 2014 is linked to the creature according to the Chinese zodiac. Those born during the year are said to be under the influence of the horse with attributes such as hardworking and sociable.
Designs, Specifications and Ordering Silver Coins
Perth Mint artist Tom Vaughan designed the reverse image featured on the 2014 Proof Year of the Horse 5 oz Silver Coin. It offers two horses standing in a stylized Chinese landscape. The Chinese character for horse is seen above the animals. Inscribed below is ‘Year of the Horse’ with the Perth Mint mintmark of ‘P’ to the right.
Each silver coin is struck as legal tender of Australia under the Australian Currency Act of 1965. That status is indicated on the coin’s obverse with an inscription of ‘8 DOLLARS,’ which is joined by ‘2014,’ ‘AUSTRALIA,’ ‘ELIZABETH II’ and ‘5 oz 999 SILVER.’ These surround a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley.
Specifications include a minimum gross weight of 155.673 grams, a diameter of 65.60 mm and a thickness of 5.80 mm. Mintage is limited to 5,000.
