2015 Australian Gilded Koala Silver Coin Released

The 2015 Australian Gilded Koala Silver Coin is now available from the Perth Mint of Australia. This release continues a series of gilded koala coins which is now in its eighth issue.

Like previous program strikes, each 2015 coin is composed of one ounce of 99.9% pure silver with selective 24-karat gold gilding. Mintage for the coin is limited to 5,000.
"The koala is well-adapted to Australia’s dry conditions as they do not actually require water to drink," describes the Perth Mint. "Receiving all the moisture they need from eucalyptus leaves, koalas spend most of their time in these trees for this reason, and because they are known to sleep among the shaded branches for up to 20 hours each day."
Gilded koala coins debuted in 2008, one year after the related silver bullion coin program. Both series feature annually changing reverse designs increasing their desirability to collectors.
Designs and Specifications
On the reverse of the 2015 Gilded Koala Silver Coin is a design depicting a single adult koala by Perth Mint artist Ing Ing Jong. The marsupial is shown sitting in the fork of a eucalyptus tree with a rural scene in the background. Inscriptions include AUSTRALIAN KOALA and 2015 1 oz 999 SILVER. The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mint mark completes the design.
Each coin is struck as legal tender of Australia under the Australian Currency Act of 1965. Accordingly, the obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA and the face value of 1 DOLLAR.
