As part of the process leading to the production of the March of Dimes Commemorative Silver Dollars, multiple design candidates have been created and unveiled by the U.S. Mint.

In fact, 40 different candidates have been offered for review with 22 presented for the obverse and 18 for the reverse. These designs are shown further below for your review, but first, a bit of background.

The March of Dimes Commemorative Coin Act, Public Law 112-209, was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama on December 18, 2012. Under the terms of the Act, the Secretary of the Treasury, and thus, the United States Mint, is directed to strike and issue up to 500,000 silver dollars in 2015 with designs emblematic of the mission and programs of the March of Dimes.

The March of Dimes (www.marchofdimes.com) was originally established by Franklin D. Roosevelt on January 3, 1938 as the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. Fund-raising efforts by the foundation involved the collection of dimes from children which eventually led to the name change.

"Once again, a coin will help our nation fight a health threat to our children," said Dr. Jennifer L. Howse, President of the March of Dimes. "During the Great Depression, citizens sent their precious dimes — 4 billion of them — to the White House to fund research in the successful fight against polio. Today, the sale of special commemorative coins will fund research to identify the causes of premature birth: A dime defeated polio; this commemorative dollar will fight prematurity."

Surcharges of $10 will be collected on the sale of each coin. These proceeds will be forwarded to the March of Dimes to help finance research, education, and services aimed at improving the health of women, infants, and children.

The commemorative silver dollars will feature designs emblematic of the March of Dimes, as already mentioned. All 40 design candidates were reviewed on May 15th by the Commission of Fine Arts. The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee is scheduled to review them next week.

Their comments and recommendations will be considered by officials at the United States Mint before a final selection is determined by the Secretary of the Treasury. The final design will likely be unveiled later this year.
