2015 US Marshals Service Silver Dollars Launch

The first United States Mint commemorative coin program of the year launched today at noon ET. Seven new collectible products feature different U.S. Marshals Service 225th Anniversary Commemorative Coins.

These coins celebrate 225 years of achievements of the U.S. Marshals Service which has the distinction of being America’s first federal law enforcement agency. Issued as part of the program are proof and uncirculated $5 gold coins, silver dollars and clad half-dollars.

Introductory Pricing, Mintage and Specifications

Introductory pricing for the proof silver coin is $46.95 with the uncirculated silver coin selling for $43.95. Both will increase by $5 when the introductory pricing period ends on March 2, 2015, at 3 p.m. The same proof silver dollar, along with proofs of the $5 gold and clad half-dollar, is also available within a three-coin proof set. Its opening price, which can change weekly depending on the gold market, is $473.60.

Maximum mintage of the 2015 U.S. Marshals Service Silver Dollars is limited by law to 500,000. This amount is spread across all product options with the final proof to uncirculated ratio determined by demand. The three-coin proof set has its own product limit of 15,000 units.

Designs on US Marshal Silver Coins

Featuring designs emblematic of the agency’s frontier history, the obverse (heads side) of the silver coins depict the U.S. Marshals Service star. Along the bottom, silhouettes of deputies on horseback appear. Obverse inscriptions include "LIBERTY," "1789 – 2014," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "2015."

The obverse was designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) Master Designer Richard Masters. Engraving was completed by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Charles L. Vickers.

Silver dollar reverses (tails side) show a frontier U.S. Marshal leaning against a post. In his hands is a "wanted" poster with the inscription "WANTED IN FT. SMITH." Reverse inscriptions include "JUSTICE INTEGRITY SERVICE," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and "$1."

For the reverse, AIP artist Frank Morris is the designer with Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna credited for the execution.

Ordering and Surcharge

U.S. Marshals Service 225th Anniversary Commemorative Silver Dollars may be ordered directly from the United States Mint via its website, located here, or by calling 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468). The link goes directly to the Mint’s commemorative page, which also offers information about the gold and clad versions.

Surcharges of $10 per silver dollar have been added to the price of each coin. Along with surcharges on the associated gold and half-dollars — $35 per and $3 per, the first $5 million raised goes to U.S. Marshals Museum, Inc. (www.usmarshalsmuseum.com) for the preservation, maintenance, and display of artifacts and documents. Remaining funds will be divided between the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association Foundation, and the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

In March, the U.S. Mint’s second commemorative coin program of the year debuts with the release of 2015 March of Dimes Silver Dollars.
