2016 American Liberty 1 Oz Silver Medals Release

Later today at noon Eastern Time, the United States Mint will begin selling 1-ounce, .999 fine American Liberty Silver Medals.

Buying options include two medals that have common designs — one from the West Point Mint and one from the San Francisco Mint. Their sales are limited to 12,500 per medal, and there is a household ordering limit of 2 per medal.

Coin collectors are familiar with their designs as they appeared on last year’s 24K $100 American Liberty gold coin. The obverse (heads) of both medals offer a modern depiction of Liberty that evokes the ideals of liberty, courage, and hope. The medals’ reverse (tails) depicts an American eagle rising in flight, gripping a branch in its talons as an embodiment of freedom.

Their size and major specifications are familiar as well since they are produced from the same silver blanks as used in making American Eagle silver coins.

Each medal is $34.95, which is about $16 higher than their melt value at this writing and significantly less than issue prices of collector American Silver Eagles.
