Earlier today, February 14, the United States Mint started selling its latest product for coin collectors, its 2017 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set™.
Available for $31.95, the set includes all five of this year’s quarters in proof quality and in 90% silver (and 10% copper). The set’s coins combine in face value to $1.25, although their silver value with their weight of 0.904 troy ounces is $16.37 at today’s London silver prices of $18.10 an ounce.
The U.S. Mint in San Francisco produces all them. Each has an ‘S’ mint mark and the popular proof finish with sharp, frosted designs and mirror-like backgrounds. This year’s 25-cent coins have reverses emblematic of:
- Effigy Mounds National Monument in Iowa
- Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in Washington, D.C.
- Ozark National Scenic Riverways in Missouri
- Ellis Island (Statue of Liberty National Monument) in New Jersey
- George Rogers Clark National Historical Park in Indiana
Quarter obverses (heads) share John Flanagan’s 1932 portrait of George Washington.
The 2017 coins represent the 36th through 40th in the Mint’s series of America the Beautiful Quarters®. The program launched in 2010, and it offers five unique designs annually that honor a national site from the 50 states, the District of Columbia or one of the five US territories.
For protection, the set’s coins are held in a single lens that allows for easy viewing of both coin sides. The outer box that holds the lens and a Certificate of Authenticity features images of the sites commemorated on the quarters.
