The United States Mint today released its latest coin for collectors, the 2016-W Uncirculated American Silver Eagle. Unlike those from past years with their reeded edge, this one has a smooth edge with anniversary lettering commemorating the 30 years of American Silver Eagle coinage.
Struck in an ounce of .999 pure silver, the collectible is available for $44.95, which is $5 more than the starting price of last year’s coin.
The uncirculated coin mostly looks like the bullion version, which is intended for investors and has sales of over 37 million since launching in January. Its uncirculated finish is further distinguished by the "W" mint mark to denote its production at the U.S. Mint at West Point.
Its final sales total will not reach close to the million mark based on past issues, but more than 200,000 will get sold. Sales of last year’s coin ended early but they still reached nearly 224,000 when including orders of the 2015 Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set which also has the coin. (This year’s dollar coin set goes on sale December 14 for $49.95.)
The edging change is for this year only, as mandated by Congress under the multi-faceted Public Law 114-94 (FAST Act), and it only applies to collector versions like this uncirculated coin and the already issued proof Silver Eagle.
