2016 US Mint Silver Proof Set Nears 240,000 in Sales

The 2016 Silver Proof Set continued its reign as the silver product leader. Buyers scooped up 4,105 of them, the most in three weeks, causing the set’s overall number to climb to 239,067.

More buying activity is expected in the coming weeks due to long-awaited new releases. The U.S. Mint announced its 2016-W American Eagle Silver Proof Coin will debut on September 16. The annual staple in the Mint’s line-up is easily one of the world’s most popular coin products.

New products hitting the market sooner, on August 23, are the 2016 American Liberty Silver Medals. Their release announcement was also made this week. These medals feature the same designs that are on the 2015 $100 American Liberty High Relief Gold Coin. Two options will be available: one minted in San Francisco and another at West Point. Beyond their mint mark, the two medals will be identical, composed of one ounce of 99.9% pure silver and produced in with a proof finish.

On the investment side, with bullion American Silver Eagle sales slowing to a crawl compared to previous months, the 2016-dated coins are no longer on pace to beat the record sales that was set in 2015. Just 75,000 coins have been ordered this month by the U.S. Mint’s network of authorized purchasers, which put 2016’s new total at 27,695,500 coins. That is 2.4% lower than sales through the same time last year.

The table below shows the latest sales stats for collector coins and related silver products from the U.S. Mint. Sunday, July 31, is the as of date for the standard collectibles and Friday, August 5, is the as of date for the bullion products.
