50th Anniversary Kennedy Half-Dollar Silver Coin Collection
June 24, 2014 by Darrin Lee Unser · Leave a Comment
The 50th anniversary of the Kennedy half-dollar will be commemorated this year with three new and unique products from the United States Mint.
Those products will include seven coins with four different finishes in proof, reverse proof, uncirculated and enhanced uncirculated. Compositions of the special commemoratives include a 99.99% fine gold coin, two cupro-nickel clad coins and, for the silver coin enthusiast, four 90% silver half-dollars.
In keeping with the half-century tradition of the Kennedy half-dollar, obverses will feature a Gilroy Roberts portrait of the 35th US President. However, these special commemoratives will be struck with a higher relief portrait of Kennedy as first created by Roberts in 1963 for a Kennedy medal. The design was later modified for the half-dollar coin. The standard Heraldic Eagle design by Frank Gasparro will be shown on the reverse just like all the other half-dollars since 1964.
50th Anniversary Kennedy Half-Dollar Silver Coin Collection
The 50th Anniversary Kennedy Half-Dollar Silver Coin Collection is listed to include four different 2014 Kennedy half-dollar silver coins:
- 2014-P Proof Kennedy Silver Half-Dollar (struck at the US Mint facility in Philadelphia)
- 2014-W Reverse Proof Kennedy Silver Half-Dollar (struck at the US Mint facility in West Point)
- 2014-S Enhanced Uncirculated Kennedy Silver Half-Dollar (struck at the US Mint facility in San Francisco)
- 2014-D Uncirculated Kennedy Silver Half-Dollar (struck at the US Mint facility in Denver)
A release date for the silver coin collection is not yet available. However, its pricing has been announced at $99.95. This equates to just under $25 per silver half-dollar.
Combined, the four silver coins of the set will contain approximately 1.44 troy ounces of silver. Based on the London Fix for silver of $20.75 an ounce on Monday, June 23, 2014, each set would have a melt value of about $29.88.
Other 50th anniversary of the Kennedy half-dollar Products
In addition to the above mentioned silver coin collection, the United States Mint also plans to issue a dual-dated 1964-2014 Kennedy half-dollar. This proof quality coin is struck at West Point from approximately three-quarters of an ounce of 24-karat (99.99% fine) gold. The gold coin is scheduled for release on August 5, 2014, with pricing to be set the previous week.
Finally, a 2014 50th Anniversary Kennedy Two-Coin Clad Set will also be issued by the U.S. Mint beginning on July 24. Included in the set are two uncirculated clad halves with one produced at the Philadelphia Mint and the other at the Denver Mint. The two-coin set will sell for $9.95.
All above coins will feature a portrait of Kennedy in higher relief.
Standard Kennedy half-dollars are also available from the United States Mint. This includes coins issued as part of the 2014 Silver Proof Set, the 2014 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set, the 2014 Proof Set, the 2014 Mint Set and bags and rolls of the Kennedy 50c coins.
