Continuing a trend that began late last year, April sales of American Silver Eagle bullion coins maintained a roller coaster pattern, falling for the month after rebounding in the previous one.
According to the latest published data, United States Mint authorized purchasers ordered 1,520,000 Silver Eagles last month. The amount is 40.2% lower than the March tally of 2,542,000 and down 46.1% from April of 2011.
A last day pick-up of 200,000 actually prevented the .999 fine silver coins from registering their smallest monthly total since July 2008.
Before casting the month as completely down and out for the American Silver Eagle, it was the fifth best ever April for the series which dates back to 1986. Also, demand for bullion coins around this time of year is generally weaker than earlier and later months.
The following monthly totals show how the silver coins have performed over the past year.
