The Royal Canadian Mint unveiled the final coin in its "Exchange $20 for $20" series. Collectors may place their orders now for the holiday-themed 2012 $20 Silver Magical Reindeer Commemorative Coin for $20 and shipping will start in November.
This extremely popular "Exchange $20 for $20" program started in 2011 and has been a huge success for the Mint with sell outs of all five prior coins in the series. What draws collectors’ attention are the unique designs, the precious metal content of the coins, and the affordable price that equals the coins’ face value.
Previously, mintages have been limited to 250,000, except for the first strike that was capped at 200,000. For the Silver Magical Reindeer Commemorative Coin, though, the mintage is described as, "While Supplies Last." A household limit, on the other hand, is clearly confined to three units, and the coin is only available to Canada and the U.S.
Magical Reindeer Coin Designs and Specifications
A graceful depiction of a magical reindeer spreads across the coin’s reverse. Its head and antlers are surrounded by numerous stars. This artwork, by Virginia Boulay, is bordered with inscriptions of, "20 DOLLARS," "FINE SILVER ARGENT PUR 9999," "2012" and "CANADA."
Shown on the obverse is Susanna Blunt’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Encircling the profile portrait are the inscriptions, "ELIZABETH II" and "D·G·REGINA."
Like similar coins in the program, each $20 Magical Reindeer coin is composed of 99.99% fine silver and weighs 7.96 grams, thus equaling about a quarter ounce of pure silver. Its diameter is 27mm and its edges are serrated.
It is likely the coin will be packaged within a clear vinyl pouch and mounted on illustrated certificate booklet that describes the coin and program, as such was the arrangement for the prior strike. However, at the time of this writing, there was no confirmation of its packaging
