Interest in silver coins skyrocketed last week, based on the newest United States Mint sales stats. That is because the 2013-W American Silver Eagle Proof Coin launched.
Some of the buying frenzy it created led to higher sales among the other U.S. Mint silver coins and related products.
Between its release Thursday, January 24, 2013 and Monday, January 28, 2013, collectors ordered 258,860 of the 99.9% pure Silver Eagle Proof Coins. That kind of explosive start was similar to debut sales of earlier dated American Silver Eagles. Last year’s strike began in April with 299,539 over five days and 2011’s proof coin opened in June with 367,623 orders over six days.
Stealing some of the proof coins’ thunder was the sister bullion American Silver Eagle. So far in January, the U.S. Mint’s small group of authorized buyers logged 7,420,000 in total sales, thus breaking the all-time monthly record.
As for the 2013 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Sets, their sales numbers climbed another 7,881 for a total of 62,202. In the prior week, collectors picked up 5,270.
Third most popular in silver product was the 2012-W American Silver Eagle Uncirculated Coin. It advanced by 2,326 this time after gaining 1,706 previously.
