Celebrations continue for the semi-centennial of Doctor Who as the Perth Mint of Australia marks its five decades with the 2013 Doctor Who 50th Anniversary 1/2oz Silver Proof Eleven-Coin Set.
This anniversary set of silver coins, which is currently the Mint’s best-seller, is available for AUS $635.45, or US $615.24 — pricing can change based in the silver market. Its mintage is extremely limited with 3,000 to be issued worldwide.
Of note, a 2013 Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Silver Proof Coin was also issued by the Perth Mint. It debuted in June and quickly sold out with a mintage of 10,000.
"Produced by the BBC, Doctor Who is the world’s longest running sci-fi program having captivated audiences of all ages since 1963," describes the Perth Mint.
"Since its debut, the program has featured the adventures of a time travelling, humanoid alien known as the Doctor as he explores the universe in the TARDIS, his indestructible time machine that is bigger in the inside than the outside."
Throughout the fifty year history of the show, the main character of Doctor Who has been played by eleven different individuals. This is explained by the lore of the program as "Regeneration." Under the phenomenon, the Doctor undergoes a transformation resulting in a new physical form with a different personality.
Regeneration is the theme of the new set of 1/2 ounce silver coins. A different coin is included for each of the actors who portrayed the time traveling humanoid. The actors are depicted in color on reverses of the strikes.
