Hot Springs National Park Quarter Introduces America the Beautiful Coins

The United States Mint on Tuesday, April 20, 2010, introduced the first coin in the America the Beautiful Quarters Program, the Hot Springs National Park Quarter.

The quarter-dollar was released during an event at the Arkansas park on its 178th anniversary. This same coin, but struck in silver, will be featured in two U.S. Mint products later this year.

A "duplicate" of it will also be released as the very first America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin.

The three silver products include:

  • 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set – scheduled for release on May 27, 2010
  • 2010 US Mint Silver Proof Set – set for release sometime in August or September
  • 2010 Hot Springs America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin – schedule for a late summer release

The Hot Springs quarter was actually released into circulation on the day prior to the Mint ceremony, and is available in bags and rolls from the Mint Web site at http://www.usmint.gov.

The quarter program and related products will honor 56 different National Parks or National Sites through 2021 — one site, at a rate of five per year, for each U.S. state and Territory, and the District of Columbia.

"With the launch of the Hot Springs National Park Quarter, a uniquely American journey begins, a journey through coins in celebration of the beauty, history and impact of national sites in every state and territory," Mint Director Moy said at the Hot Springs event.

Designed by Don Everhart and sculpted by Joseph Menna, the reverse side of the new coin shows the Hot Springs National Parks headquarters building, complete with a thermal spring fountain in foreground.

The bullion version for issue later this year will weigh 5.0 ounces, have a diameter of 3.0 inches, and be struck from .999 fine silver.
