Inaugural Hawaii Volcanoes 5 Ounce Silver Coin Sales Surge
October 4, 2012 by Rhonda Kay · Leave a Comment
The fall season kicked off with the debut of the numismatic 2012-P Hawaii Volcanoes National Park 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin. Its inaugural sales reached 9,186 units.
Although lower than weekly sales for the much older and always popular 2012-W Proof Silver Eagle, the Hawaii Volcanoes silver coin overshadowed previous five ounce sales openers.
Released from the U.S. Mint on September 24, the collector Hawaii Volcanoes silver coin impressively drew more initial orders than all three prior 2012-dated five ounce issues. Below is the list with their opening numbers in the first week.
- 2012-P Acadia National Park hit 6,552 in August
- 2012-P Chaco Culture National Historical Park earned 6,365
- 2012-P El Yunque National Forest attained 6,514
Collectors who decided to wait to make their purchases of numismatic America the Beautiful Silver Uncirculated Coins will now have to pay $25 more because silver product sales were halted on Wednesday, October 3, so that the Mint could raise coin prices. The difference between the coins’ melt value and U.S. Mint price had steadily shrunk to the point that triggered the increase. When sales resume, the five ounce silver coins will be $229.95 each.
As for the leader in sales, silver enthusiasts picked up 12,133 of the one ounce 2012-W Proof Silver Eagle coins during the week, which was down from 31,964 in the prior round. It may have been the debut of the five ounce .999 fine silver piece that curbed some activity. Its price is also going up, by $5.
In bullion news, 200 of the investment-grade 2012-P Chaco Culture National Historical Park 5 Ounce Silver Bullion Coins and 30,000 of American Silver Eagle bullion coins were bought at the close of September by the U.S. Mint’s network of Authorized Purchasers since the last report. As for October, either the buying activity has not started yet, or the numbers have not been updated by the Mint, because sales are zero for the month.
