Only hours remain for buyers to order the 2012 American Silver Eagle Two Coin Set from San Francisco. After nearly four weeks on sale, the U.S. Mint will pull the sets from its store shelves after 5:00 PM ET on Thursday, July 5, 2012.
Collectors have been closely watching how the sets are received and how many are bought, helped by a sales odometer located on the set’s product page that offers everyone daily updates.
The approaching order deadline coupled with the U.S. Mint’s 2012 Summer Catalog promoting it has boosted sales in recent days. On Monday, the 200,000 threshold was crossed after a weekend increase of more than 25,000 orders. It was the best weekend for the 2012 American Silver Eagle Two Coin Set since the first one after its June 7, 2012 release.
Within the two coin set are two unique American Eagles, including:
- 2012-S Reverse Proof American Silver Eagle
- 2012-S Proof American Silver Eagle
Both of these are produced in San Francisco and bear the "S" mint mark. The U.S. Mint in San Francisco has not produced a proof American Silver Eagle of any type since 1992.
The cost of the two coin set is $149.95, which equates to a per coin price of about $75. That is nearly $47 more than the current melt value of each one ounce, 99.9% fine Silver Eagle. Spot silver as of this writing is just over $28 an ounce.
