Lunar Ox Cameo Coin from Royal Canadian Mint

The Royal Canadian Mint’s lunar 12-coin series ends this year with the newly released 2009 $15 Lunar Ox Cameo coin. The series began in 1998 and concludes with an exceptionally original design featuring a gold plated octagonal center core surround by a thick outer ring of silver.

Struck in 92.5 percent silver, 7.5 percent copper and in proof condition, the coin’s inner design by Harvey Chan depicts an Ox resting in a cameo field, with a bird perched atop its back. The wide outer ring bears 12 animals representing the Chinese lunar calendar.

The Ox is the lunar sign for those born in 1913, 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997 and 2009. According to the Mint’s website description:

It’s not just physical strength, but a special fortitude of the mind that keeps the Ox going no matter how heavy the load nor how difficult the road. What other zodiacs may gain through wit and cunning, the Ox will achieve through sheer tenacity and dedication.

Don’t be fooled by the Ox’s quiet and introverted ways. Still waters run deep; the Ox harbours a dignified blend of intelligence and confidence. He’s not easily bullied and will stand up and speak with captivating eloquence to restore order. He’s the good Samaritan that will come to the rescue and disappear before any can get his name.

The Ox is fair-minded and a good listener, but always remember the other adage, "stubborn as an ox." Don’t count on changing his mind, but count on him. The Ox is one sign you can trust. He’ll never let you down.

The lunar coin obverse (heads side) bears an image of the former effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II (1990-2003), and is the only 2009 coin so portrayed.

The silver coin weighs 34.0 grams, has a diameter of 40 mm, includes a serrated edge, and is limited to a mintage of 48888 worldwide.
