New NGC Label for 9-11 Silver MedalsThe 2011 September 11 National Medal, otherwise known as the 9/11 silver medal, is getting a unique label from Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), according to a press release that was issued last Friday.

The special labelĀ is designed specifically for the medal’s holder. It features a portion of the obverse image of the 9/11 silver medal, the side that shows Lady Liberty holding up the Lamp of Remembrance, with a red, white, and blue background of a US flag.

The label includes all of NGC’s security measures, including the bar code and a unique identification number, and a description of the medal.

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation certifies and grades medals as well as coins, and each certified submission gets encapsulated in a secure holder to protect against corrosive gases and moisture. Several grading tiers are offered by the company, but the two that are being used for their 2011 September 11 National Medal label are the "Modern" and the "Modern Special" tier services.

The United States Mint launched the 9/11 silver medal on June 20, 2011. They are available with two separate mint marks which denoted where they were produced. The "W" mint mark indicates production at the West Point Mint while the "P denotes a striking at the Philadelphia Mint. Through to September 2, 2011, the United States Mint has sold 98,111 from West Point and 58,556 from Philadelphia.

The commemorative strikes are for the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States. Each 9/11 silver medal has a price of $66.95, which includes a $10 surcharge that goes to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center (http://www.911memorial.org/). The medals may be purchased directly from the U.S. Mint’s online store at http://catalog.usmint.gov/.
