Post Suspension Silver Product Sales Rebound for US Mint

Amidst U.S. Mint silver product suspensions and their eventual return to sales, buying activity mostly improved. Twenty numismatic silver products experienced higher week-over-week gains as compared to just 4 in the prior round.

2012-W American Silver Eagle Uncirculated Coin

The 2012-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle coin was among the silver products with improved sales.

Demand for silver coins and other related silver products, however, did not bounce back to the pre-suspension levels. Three factors playing a role in the latest sales stats were:

  • the number of silver product availability days,
  • the U.S. Mint’s $5 per ounce price increase on silver coins, and
  • silver prices that fell significantly, in a few short days, from earlier heights that helped kicked-off the silver product suspensions

The temporary sales suspension occurred mid-week, lasting from Wednesday, October 3 to Wednesday, October 10, and the weekly figures account for sales occurring between Monday through to the following Monday. Hence, U.S. Mint reported sales in the prior round and the latest round were cut short.

As for the price of silver on the London Fix, it dropped nearly a dollar from $34.72 an ounce on October 3 to $33.79 an ounce by October 10. Many collectors closely watch market prices of the white metal and tend to curb their collectible coin spending when silver coin melt values slip. Interestingly, that was not necessary the case in the latest round of sales stats.

It was for 2012-W Proof Silver Eagle coins, as collectors recently ordered 8,835. That amount was down from the 20,359 in the prior report. The $5 price increase for the Silver Eagle coupled with falling silver prices appears to have dampened enthusiasm.

But as mentioned, week-over-week increases in other U.S. Mint products were mostly the norm. As an example, the trend reversed for the 2012-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle coins. Purchases nearly doubled in the current round with 1,589 after only having 846 previously.
