Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Honored with 2012 UK Silver Coins

Minting facilities from around the world have been striking and releasing coins as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebration for Queen Elizabeth II. Not surprisingly, a significant collection of 60th anniversary products is offered by Britain’s Royal Mint (www.royalmint.com).

Just as the 60-year reign of the Queen has included a variety of important events, the Royal Mint’s Diamond Jubilee silver coin portfolio is just as varied. Among them, one can find silver proof coins, gold-plated silver coins, silver Piedfort coins, and silver sets ranging from three coins to twenty four.

All of the products celebrate the 6-decade long reign of Queen Elizabeth II who assumed the thrown in 1952 following the death of her father, George VI. A short description of currently available Diamond Jubilee silver coins from the Royal Mint follow.

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee UK Silver Proof Coin is the first UK coin ever to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee. The unique double-headed strike contains two specially commissioned portraits of the Queen as completed by renowned artist Ian Rank-Broadley. One side is a portrait of the Queen as she appeared sixty-years ago while the other side contains a present day image.

Struck from .925 sterling silver, the £5 proof 28.28G, 38.61mm diameter coin is presented in a custom-made case along with a certificate of authenticity. The maximum mintage for the piece is 75,000. It is available now for £82.50, plus shipping and handling.

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee UK Gold Plated Silver Coin

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee UK Gold Plated Silver Coin contains the same imagery as seen on the aforementioned silver proof coin, including the double-headed Ian Rank-Broadley design of the Queen when first crowned and a present-day image. Still struck from .925 sterling silver, these coins have a fine gold plating.

Mintage of the gold-plated version is listed at just 12,500. Each will ship in a custom-made case with a certificate of authenticity for £99.50.

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee UK Silver Piedfort Coin

Once again, Ian Rank-Broadley’s past and present images of Queen Elizabeth II are shown on the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee UK Silver Piedfort Coin. These proof quality coins, however, are struck on double-thickness blanks making them especially unique to a collection. Adding to their desirability is the limited mintage of just 3,250.

These coins have the same diameter of 38.61 mm as the two previously listed pieces, but contain twice the amount of silver with a total weight of 56.56g. They ship in a custom-made case with a numbered certificate of authenticity for £145.00.

Diamond Jubilee Royal Silver Set

The Diamond Jubilee Royal Silver Set contains a total of three unique silver proof coins representing the importance of Elizabeth II to her realm. Included in the set are coins struck by the Royal Mint, the Royal Canadian Mint and the Royal Australian Mint.

It features the British Armed Forces Tri-Service insignia which represents the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force.
