First day sales of uncirculated and proof 2015 March of Dimes Silver Dollars hit a combined 24,376 coins, the United States Mint said on Monday.
Released on Friday, March 13 at noon ET, the two collector silver coins logged sales by midnight of 16,436 for the proof and 7,940 for the uncirculated.
Commemorative coin laws tend to authorize more collectibles than are ever sold. The U.S. Mint can strike 500,000 coins across both silver dollar options, according to Public Law 112-209, so just 4.9% of them are off the table. These coins celebrate the 75th anniversary of the March of Dimes Foundation.
Introductory pricing for the silver dollars last until April 13 at 3 PM ET when they go up by $5 each. The proof, minted at West Point, is $46.95 and the uncirculated, minted at Philadelphia, is $43.95. These prices include $10 surcharges paid to the foundation to help finance research, education, and services aimed at improving the health of women, infants, and children.
Sales will get another strong boost on May 4 when the U.S. Mint releases the 2015 March of Dimes Special Silver Set for $61.95. It will include the proof silver dollar, plus two one-of-a-kind silver dimes that are only available in the set. Collectors have already expressed strong interest in it.
