Last month the Royal Canadian Mint introduced a new proof silver coin, the first in a series of five depicting the Great Lakes.
This first 2014-dated release shows Lake Superior, the biggest of the five, with forthcoming silver coins in the series to depict the Great Lakes of:
- Ontario, with a release in March 2014
- Erie, with a release in June 2014
- Michigan, with a release in October 2014
- Huron, with a release in February 2015
Each of the one-ounce $20 coins is composed from 99.99% pure silver to a diameter of 38 mm. Mintages are kept at 10,000 per design.
Reverse sides of the silver coin feature an interpretation of the bathymetric map of Lake Superior which is highlighted with colored enamel. Inscriptions around this design read 2014, 20 DOLLARS, LAKE SUPERIOR and LAK SUPERIEUR.
Obverses feature the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt with surrounding inscriptions of CANADA, D G REGINA and ELIZABETH II.

A subscription guarantees product availability of at least one full series, notes the Royal Canadian Mint. The Mint also says it includes a "beautiful collector case" that comes with the 2014 $20 Lake Ontario Silver Coin.
