Silver Prices Soar, Recording 2009 Highs with Near 10% Weekly Gains

Silver prices soared for the second straight week. The metal hit new 2009 highs, with both London and New York markets surging 9.7 percent and 9.9 percent, respectively.
New York silver futures for December delivery closed Friday to $16.285 an ounce and surged $1.47 for the week, the biggest increase of a most-active contract since May 8. The closing price on Thursday was a half penny higher, which was the highest price since Aug. 7, 2008.
London silver prices jumped $1.41 on the week, and follow last week’s advance of 53 cents. The metal was set to $15.95 an ounce, marking the highest level of 2009. London silver is up $5.16, or 47.8 percent this year as compared to the $10.79 closing price on Dec. 31, 2008.
